History

These motorcycles first hit the scene back in 1991 and dominated the H-D lineup as its premier performance Big Twin bike. It was the perfect blend of touring bike power in a sleeker, smoother ride and riders raved over it. However, this wouldn’t be the only impressive performance bike to come out of the Harley-Davidson® factory. 

In fact, before this iconic line appeared on the market, there was another performance group that employed many of the same technologies, called the Softail® group. This lineup generally came with an edgier look and more features for a more relaxed, extended ride. 

Essentially, they were both Big Twin engine performance bikes and this was one of the reasons the company decided to merge the two. So many Dyna® models got a slight upgrade and can now be found in the Softail® category. However, for a true Dyna® design, you’ll have to look for the used models of this Harley line.

Power

One of the bigger differences between today’s smooth-ride models and the Dyna® line is power. The older bikes were generally sportier, so you’re going to get more acceleration punch and more speed. This was aided by a sleek design that allowed riders to go faster and zip through traffic. 

Handling

One of the most popular reasons to invest in a Dyna® motorcycle is the smooth suspension systems. They squeeze a rear-suspension system into the frame so you can get a smoother, easier-to-handle ride. 

Style

Another big difference between the two families is the style. Dyna® motorcycles not only perform with a sportier edge, but their overall aesthetic was sportier as well. They abandoned some of the hard, muscle-bike traditions of Harley-Davidson® for something sleeker and fresher.
